Horst Antes | Figure September 1

Horst Antes (born 1936 in Heppenheim) is considered a co-founder of the new figurative painting movement in Germany. For a long time, his characteristic “head-and-feet figures” were virtually his only subject: they consist primarily of a head and feet that seem to merge into one another, and appear in the artist’s paintings, prints, and sculptural works alike. “Figure September 1” was installed in 1972 as part of the “Street Art Program” in the Old Town at the corner of Kramerstraße and Knochenhauerstraße; however, its delicate aluminum alloy suffered damage there. It was transferred to the Sprengel Museum Hannover in 1983 and placed on the sidewalk near the entrance. There, it blends subtly into the dynamics of the urban space and becomes a monument to physical and mental agility.
